Tonight I wanted to share with you my thoughts on Self Portratit by Dale James. I’ve never been a fan of music that overpowers a voice. Call me silly, but to me, good music is a great voice and good guitar softly coloring the lyrics. Dale accomplishes this as he traverses a spectrum of different genres affording us a glimpse of what a diverse talent he is. The fact that the album spans different styles it something I love. Listening to the same style over and over is like eating the same meal over and over. I love the diversity. From the butter smooth voice telling a story of heartbreak in “It’s Over” to the haunting reggae melody of “No Place In Our Time”, to the crooner style of “That’s The Way I Feel”, he takes you comfortably through the transitions, leaving you wanting more of each style. As you listen to each track, it is clear there’s great care given to both the construction of the songs and the arrangements. Overall a very impressive album. I will be watching for more from Dale.
